Professional Electrical Subpanel Repair in McLoud, OK

A subpanel can develop problems just like any panel, and the most serious is an improperly bonded neutral and ground. At 24/7 Electrical Services and Repairs, we diagnose and repair subpanel problems quickly and correctly, bringing them back into compliance with the code. We find and fix the bonded neutral and ground that lets dangerous current flow on metal surfaces it should never reach. We repair the loose and corroded connections that are so common in garages, barns, and detached buildings. We evaluate the feeder to confirm it is sized correctly for both the load and the distance it travels. We test breakers and connections to find the source of any overheating, then replace what the heat has damaged. For detached buildings, we add the grounding electrode the code requires and confirm the neutral separation. We never use off brand breakers that fit loosely and conduct poorly. Every repair is done to the code and verified before we close the cover. A subpanel with a bonded neutral and ground is a hidden hazard, and resolving exactly that is our job. Our pricing is upfront and our work is licensed. That is the standard McLoud homeowners trust.

I had a different electrician come replace a breaker panel for me and he was in the attic at one point. He told me there were all kinds of repairs needing done and quoted me a little over $1800 to fix it. I called 24/7 electric out for a second opinion and their guy told me nothing up there was an emergency and the minor things he noticed were easy fixes that I could do myself- like putting connectors on and a box over some spliced and capped wires. He took pictures so he could explain what he saw. I know who to call now for honesty! Thank you 24/7 for saving me a big nonessential expense!!

I did not realize that they were based in McLoud, but they didn't bat an eye about coming to Edmond to give me a free estimate and then followed with the actual install a few days later. The electricians were well groomed and had on identifying shirts & hats. They were professional, efficient & thorough and left the area clean and orderly. I also needed a new switch which he had on the truck and so they installed that too, as well as the two expected light fixtures. I am thrilled with their service and the price was reasonable.

We needed an electrical lamp light post installed but they first had to remove the very old non working gas light, it required digging under a concrete drive and moving river rock out of the way. They also had to change the outside lights. They did all of that in a timely manner. They were very neat putting all the grass back cleaning up the walkways. They were friendly and highly competent. Scheduled an estimate call to have a Transfer Box installed for a generator when my power goes out. The technician suggested a better way of doing it that would cost me less money (saving money is up my alley). The appointment was scheduled 3 days out, and when the date came, he was early. The job was completed in a timely manner, and the price was very reasonable. It's nice to know that you are not being taken advantage of to make extra money. Outstanding work, and now I'm ready for those power outages, and it didn't hurt my pocket. Thanks Guy's!!!

These are a rare breed in today's day and time. I am a senior citizen age 67 on a fixed income and 100% disabled. I own my home outright and I've put a new roof on it but the storm tore my roof and my pipes completely off by my 50-year-old pecan trees. The water shot through my Hunter ceiling fans and broke them and broke several of my electrical pieces in my home the water damage was very extensive. I was very fortunate as statewide roofing helps me get my home back together again. And now 24/7 came out installed my doorbell fixed my fan to where they had to just take it down and put a new light up so that it would not be dangerous. Not only that they actually put a temporary light up until they could get me one with a cord on it and they didn't have to do that. They also replaced every bulb in my home because I am handicapped and cannot do so. He fixed everything he could possibly fix. The owner took special attention to a little old lady like me and helped me God bless these people they will help you too once a year they help us please take advantage and call them before it would be too late it's every August I believe. what is so awesome about that is they wait until the end of the season to see how much damage has been done to the seniors and they actually help us out with no charge. Gather some things they cannot fix like I need a whole new electrical box and they can't do that but they can help me keep my lights on and keep me safe. And keep me to where I can live in my home and die in it I don't have but maybe 10 years left and I thank them that I don't have to worry those last 10 years. I pray I have longer but we're realistic 67 maybe? Just trying to live in my family home that I've been in since I was a baby and 24/7 electricity has helped me and I'm sure so many other seniors there's no other company like this in Oklahoma City and a lot of people can take heed from these folks. I've asked habitat for humanity I've asked all kinds of help and statewide roofing and 24/7 electric are the only two that would help me as a senior. You guys again I cannot tell you enough how much you have made my life a better place thank you God bless.....

This is my new go-to electrical service company. My dryer wouldn't power on. The dryer repairman said it was a breaker box problem and I would need an electrician to fix it. I called 24/7, and they sent Brian out right away. He confirmed that my breaker box was fine, and even agreed to talk to the dryer repairman. My dryer is now working properly. Since he was at my house any way, I asked Brian to repair a couple of light switches and install a new outlet. He did the job well and quickly, and cleaned up after himself. I was impressed with the responsiveness of the company, and with Brian's efficiency. I'll definitely use 24/7 again.

Electrical Subpanel Repair in McLoud, OK

Loose and corroded connections are another very frequent subpanel problem, especially in garages, barns, and detached outbuildings. The feeder connections at the subpanel must stay tight at all times to carry the current safely. Over the years, the constant cycle of heating and cooling under load can gradually loosen a once tight connection. A loose connection creates electrical resistance, and that resistance turns directly into damaging, building heat. That building heat can damage the breaker, melt the wire insulation, and eventually scorch the subpanel enclosure itself. Subpanels mounted in garages, barns, and outbuildings face moisture and wide temperature swings that steadily accelerate corrosion. A corroded connection raises the resistance and creates the very same heat and hazard over time. We inspect every single connection, find the loose and corroded ones, and repair them properly. We torque all of the connections back to the proper specification and carefully address any corrosion we find along the way. Correcting these loose and corroded connections early prevents a dangerous failure later on.

Feeder problems can leave a subpanel completely unable to do its important job safely. An undersized feeder simply cannot carry the full load the subpanel serves without overheating dangerously over time. A feeder that is too small for a long run causes voltage drop that affects the performance of connected equipment. A damaged or improperly protected feeder is a real and serious safety hazard along its entire length. We carefully evaluate the existing feeder to confirm that it is sized correctly for both the load and the distance it has to travel. When a feeder is undersized or damaged, we recommend and make the right correction. We also check the breaker protecting the feeder to confirm that it properly matches the conductors. A mismatched feeder breaker can either fail to protect the wire or trip unnecessarily under normal load. We bring the feeder and its overcurrent protection into proper, code compliant alignment. A correctly sized and properly protected feeder is absolutely essential to a safe subpanel.

Overheating and failed components are common problems that we regularly diagnose and repair in subpanels. A subpanel that feels warm to the touch or shows visible scorch marks has a connection or a breaker generating dangerous heat inside. Buzzing or crackling sounds coming from a subpanel almost always indicate arcing, which is a serious and real fire hazard. A failed or worn breaker in a subpanel needs to be replaced with the exact correct type listed and approved for that panel. We test all the breakers and every connection in the panel to find the true source of the overheating. We then replace any breaker, wire, or component that has been damaged by the heat. We torque all the repaired connections back to specification so they run cool and safe. We never use off brand breakers that fit loosely on the bus and conduct current poorly. Every repair we make restores the subpanel to safe, reliable operation. We always verify the repair runs cool and safe before we close the panel back up.

Subpanels in detached buildings have their own specific requirements that any repair must address. A detached structure needs its own grounding electrode, such as a driven ground rod, right at the building. Many older detached subpanels were installed years ago without this required grounding electrode at all. We add the proper grounding electrode system whenever we find that it is missing. The neutral and ground separation requirement is every bit as critical in a detached building subpanel. A separate disconnect may also be required right at the detached structure depending on the specific situation. We bring these detached building subpanels into full compliance with all of these requirements. Moisture, humidity, and weather make detached subpanels especially prone to corrosion and loose connections. We carefully address every one of these issues for a safe, reliable detached building subpanel. That thorough, careful approach protects the whole structure and everyone in it.

Why Electrical Code Matters for Electrical Subpanel Repair

Electrical code matters for subpanel repair because a subpanel has specific safety requirements that a repair must restore. The National Electrical Code requires that the neutral and ground be separated at a subpanel, unlike at the main panel. That single rule prevents normal current from flowing on the grounding system and energizing metal parts. A repair that leaves the neutral and ground bonded fails to meet code and leaves a real hazard in place. The code requires the feeder to be sized for the load and protected by a properly matched breaker. It requires a grounding electrode at a detached building, such as a ground rod. It governs how connections are made and torqued to prevent the heat that causes fires. When a subpanel repair ignores these rules, the danger includes shock hazards and fire. A bonded subpanel is one of the most common code violations, and it must be corrected. Unpermitted or non compliant subpanel work can also jeopardize your insurance coverage. Inspectors verify subpanel repairs closely because these details carry serious safety consequences. Repairing a subpanel to code is the only way to be sure it is genuinely safe.

Most Common Electrical Subpanel Repair Questions

Electrical subpanel repair raises plenty of practical questions, from bonding errors to feeder sizing to when replacement makes sense. We have answered the ones our McLoud customers ask most so you know what to expect before we arrive.

Several warning signs indicate that your subpanel may need repair. A burning smell from the subpanel is a serious sign that requires immediate attention. Breakers that trip frequently without an obvious cause often point to a problem in the subpanel. A subpanel that feels warm or hot to the touch signals a connection generating heat. Buzzing or crackling sounds usually mean arcing is occurring inside the subpanel. Scorch marks, corrosion, or rust inside the subpanel reveal damage that should not be ignored. Mild shocks from metal surfaces near the subpanel can indicate a serious bonding problem. Any of these signs warrants a prompt professional evaluation.

Subpanels in garages and detached buildings show some specific warning signs. Corrosion is common in these locations because of moisture and temperature swings. A subpanel that is rusty or shows water intrusion needs attention. Loose connections are common in outbuildings exposed to vibration and weather. Lights in the area that flicker or dim can point to a feeder or connection problem. Equipment that does not get enough power may indicate an undersized or failing feeder. These location specific signs are worth watching in any detached subpanel. We inspect for all of them during a subpanel evaluation.

Some subpanel problems are hidden and only a professional can find them. An improperly bonded neutral and ground is invisible without opening the panel. An undersized feeder may not show symptoms until the load is high. A missing grounding electrode at a detached building is not obvious from the outside. These hidden defects are real hazards even when nothing seems wrong. A professional inspection reveals these issues that a homeowner cannot see. We check the bonding, the feeder, and the grounding on every subpanel we evaluate. When you want to know your subpanel is safe, we provide the answer.

A bonded neutral and ground in a subpanel is a common installation error that creates a real hazard. At the main panel, the neutral and ground are correctly bonded at one point. Many people mistakenly carry that bonding into the subpanel, which is wrong. At a subpanel, the neutral and ground must be kept separate. When they are bonded at the subpanel, normal current can flow on the grounding system. This energizes metal parts that should never carry current, creating a shock hazard. This error is one of the most common subpanel defects we find. Correcting it is essential to making the subpanel safe.

Understanding why this is dangerous helps explain the importance of fixing it. The grounding system is meant to carry current only during a fault. When the neutral and ground are bonded at the subpanel, neutral current uses the ground path during normal operation. This puts current on conduit, equipment frames, and other metal surfaces. Touching two surfaces at different potentials can result in a shock. It also interferes with the proper operation of protective devices. This is exactly the hazard the separation rule prevents. A bonded subpanel is a defect that needs correction regardless of how long it has gone unnoticed.

Fixing a bonded neutral and ground requires the knowledge a licensed electrician brings. We remove the bonding screw or strap that improperly ties the neutral to the enclosure. We install a separate, isolated neutral bus if the panel needs one. We bond the ground bus to the enclosure so it provides a safe fault path. We confirm the feeder includes a separate grounding conductor as required. We verify the separation is correct before energizing the subpanel. This correction often transforms a dangerous subpanel into a safe one. When we find this defect, we fix it correctly every time.

A subpanel in your garage or shed can absolutely be repaired, and we do this work regularly. Subpanels in these locations often develop problems because of their exposure to the elements. Moisture, temperature swings, and vibration all take a toll over time. Corrosion at the connections is one of the most common issues in these subpanels. Loose connections from vibration and thermal cycling are also frequent. An improperly bonded neutral and ground is common in amateur installed outbuilding subpanels. We diagnose and repair all of these problems to make the subpanel safe. The location does not prevent a proper repair.

Detached buildings have specific requirements that a repair must address. A detached structure needs its own grounding electrode, like a ground rod, at the building. Many detached subpanels were installed without this required grounding. We add the proper grounding electrode when we find it missing. The neutral and ground must be separated, just as in any subpanel. A disconnect may be required at the detached building depending on the situation. We bring the subpanel into full compliance with these requirements. That thorough approach ensures the detached subpanel is genuinely safe.

The repair process for a garage or shed subpanel is methodical and complete. We inspect the subpanel for bonding errors, loose connections, and corrosion. We check the feeder to confirm it is sized correctly for the load and distance. We verify the grounding meets the requirements for a detached building. We correct any bonding error and separate the neutral and ground. We repair or replace damaged connections, breakers, and components. We address corrosion and protect the connections going forward. When your garage or shed subpanel needs repair, we make it safe and reliable.

A subpanel that gets hot or trips frequently is showing signs of a real problem. Heat in a subpanel most often comes from a loose or corroded connection. The resistance at a poor connection generates heat under load. An overloaded subpanel, drawing more than its feeder can supply, also runs hot. A loose feeder connection at the main panel or subpanel is a common cause. Frequent tripping can indicate an overloaded subpanel or a fault on one of its circuits. Each of these causes points to a problem that needs diagnosis. We investigate to find the true source rather than guessing.

The feeder is often involved when a subpanel overheats or trips. An undersized feeder cannot carry the subpanel’s full load without overheating. A feeder breaker that is too small for the load will trip frequently. A loose connection where the feeder lands generates heat and can cause trips. Voltage drop on a long, undersized feeder can cause equipment problems and strain. We evaluate the feeder, its connections, and its breaker as part of the diagnosis. We confirm the feeder is sized correctly for the load and the distance. When the feeder is the problem, we recommend the right correction.

Addressing a hot or tripping subpanel prevents a small problem from becoming a fire. We inspect every connection in the subpanel for the looseness and corrosion that cause heat. We test the breakers and check the feeder and its connections. We tighten connections to specification and replace any damaged components. We confirm the subpanel and feeder are not overloaded for their rating. We look for the scorch marks and heat damage that indicate trouble. We verify the subpanel runs cool before we close it back up. When your subpanel runs hot or trips often, we find and fix the cause.

A subpanel with a bonded neutral and ground is a code violation and a genuine safety hazard. The National Electrical Code requires that the neutral and ground be separated at a subpanel. This is a clear and important rule, not a technicality. When the neutral and ground are bonded at the subpanel, the installation violates this code requirement. The violation exists because of the real danger it creates. Bonding at the subpanel puts current on the grounding system during normal operation. This energizes metal parts and creates a shock hazard. The code prohibits this precisely to prevent that danger.

This violation is common, especially in older or amateur installed subpanels. Many people assume a subpanel should be wired like the main panel, which is incorrect. The result is a bonded subpanel that violates code and creates a hazard. Inspectors flag this defect when they find it during an inspection. A bonded subpanel can cause problems during a home sale or insurance review. It is one of the most frequent code violations we encounter in subpanels. Correcting it brings the subpanel into compliance and removes the hazard. We fix this violation as a routine part of subpanel repair.

Correcting the violation is straightforward for a licensed electrician. We separate the neutral and ground, isolating the neutral and bonding the ground to the enclosure. We confirm the feeder includes a separate grounding conductor. We verify the correction meets the code before energizing the subpanel. This brings the subpanel into compliance and makes it safe. The correction protects everyone who uses the circuits the subpanel serves. It also resolves a problem that could complicate a sale or inspection. When we find a bonded subpanel, we correct the violation properly.

Several signs can indicate that your subpanel feeder is undersized for the load it serves. Frequent tripping of the feeder breaker is a common sign of an undersized feeder. A feeder or its connections that run warm or hot suggest the feeder is overloaded. Lights in the area that dim when equipment runs can point to voltage drop on a small feeder. Equipment that does not perform well may be suffering from insufficient power. A subpanel that cannot support the loads you want to add may have a feeder that is too small. These signs all warrant a professional evaluation of the feeder. We determine the feeder’s adequacy through inspection and calculation.

The feeder size depends on both the load and the distance it travels. A feeder must be sized to carry the full load the subpanel serves. For a long run, the feeder may need to be larger to prevent voltage drop. A feeder that was adequate for the original load may be undersized after you add equipment. A detached building with a long feeder run is especially prone to voltage drop. We perform a load calculation and account for the distance to size the feeder properly. That assessment tells us clearly whether the feeder is adequate. We never guess at feeder sizing.

When a feeder is undersized, the right correction depends on the situation. In some cases, the feeder can be upgraded to a larger conductor to carry the load. The feeder breaker must also match the new feeder size. For a subpanel that has outgrown its feeder, a larger feeder restores proper capacity. We evaluate the most practical way to correct an undersized feeder. We size the new feeder for both the load and the distance. The result is a subpanel that performs reliably without overheating or voltage problems. When your subpanel feeder is too small, we correct it properly.

The choice between repairing and replacing a subpanel depends on its condition and the problem. Many subpanel issues are genuinely repairable, like a bonding error, a loose connection, or a failed breaker. When the subpanel itself is sound, a targeted repair restores safety at a fair cost. In other cases, the subpanel is corroded, damaged, or too small for the load. A subpanel with extensive corrosion or damage may be better replaced than repaired. A subpanel that is undersized for the area’s needs may warrant replacement with a larger one. We assess the subpanel thoroughly to determine which path makes sense. Our goal is the safest, most cost effective solution.

Several factors push the decision toward replacement. A subpanel with severe corrosion, especially in a damp location, may be beyond repair. A subpanel that is too small for the circuits the area now needs is a candidate for replacement. Extensive heat damage or scorching may mean the subpanel should be replaced. A subpanel that lacks the breaker spaces you need may warrant an upgrade. We weigh the cost of repairs against the value of a new subpanel. That honest assessment guides the recommendation. Sometimes replacement is the smarter long term choice.

There are also clear cases where repair is the right choice. A bonding error, a loose connection, or a single failed breaker does not require replacement. When the subpanel is otherwise sound and adequately sized, a repair makes sense. Correcting these issues restores safety without the cost of a new subpanel. We never push a replacement when a sound repair will do the job. At the same time, we never patch a subpanel that genuinely needs replacing. We base our recommendation on safety and value, not the larger invoice. When you face this choice, we give you a straight answer.

Repairing a subpanel yourself involves real dangers that make professional service the safer choice. The subpanel is fed by an energized feeder, and the feeder connections carry significant power. Working in the subpanel near these connections carries a risk of shock or arc flash. Correcting the neutral and ground bonding requires understanding a detail many people get wrong. A mistake in the repair can leave the subpanel dangerous rather than safe. Subpanel work often requires a permit and an inspection. The grounding and feeder details demand real knowledge to handle correctly. For all these reasons, we recommend leaving subpanel repair to a licensed professional.

The technical details of a subpanel repair require expertise to get right. The neutral and ground separation must be correct, which is the most common error. The grounding, including a detached building’s electrode, must meet code. The feeder must be confirmed as adequate for the load and distance. The connections must be torqued properly to prevent heat. Getting any of these wrong creates a hazard that may not show until it fails. A licensed electrician knows how to handle every one of these details. That knowledge is exactly what keeps the repair safe.

Hiring a licensed electrician gives you a safe subpanel and peace of mind. We diagnose the true cause of the problem and repair it correctly. We correct bonding errors, tighten connections, and replace failed components. We confirm the feeder and grounding meet code. We pull the permit and handle the inspection where required. Our work is backed by a one year labor warranty and a three year panel warranty. A free local estimate means you know the cost before we begin.
