Professional Electrical Subpanel Installation in McLoud, OK

A subpanel adds breaker space and brings circuits closer to where you need them, which makes it one of the most useful electrical upgrades. At 24/7 Electrical Services and Repairs, we install subpanels for garages, workshops, additions, finished basements, and detached buildings. We run a properly sized feeder from the main panel and install the subpanel right where the new circuits are needed. A load calculation tells us the correct feeder and subpanel size for the area, with proper headroom built in. The feeder carries the hot conductors, a neutral, and a separate grounding conductor in a code required four wire setup. At the subpanel, we keep the neutral and ground fully separated, which is one of the most important safety details. For a detached building, we add the grounding electrode the code requires at the structure. We install the circuits the area needs, label every breaker, and verify the entire installation. The grounding, bonding, and feeder sizing all require the knowledge a licensed professional brings. Our pricing is upfront and our work is licensed. We pull the permit and handle the inspection. That is the standard McLoud homeowners trust.

Brian came out, was super nice, very professional, straight forward, and told me exactly what needed to be done. I accepted the quote, and within minutes, he called me back, set up an appointment. he showed up early, and finished the repairs in less time than quoted. small businesses like 24/7 deserve more from our community. if your thinking about 24/7, just do it, you won't regret it

I had a different electrician come replace a breaker panel for me and he was in the attic at one point. He told me there were all kinds of repairs needing done and quoted me a little over $1800 to fix it. I called 24/7 electric out for a second opinion and their guy told me nothing up there was an emergency and the minor things he noticed were easy fixes that I could do myself- like putting connectors on and a box over some spliced and capped wires. He took pictures so he could explain what he saw. I know who to call now for honesty! Thank you 24/7 for saving me a big nonessential expense!!

I did not realize that they were based in McLoud, but they didn't bat an eye about coming to Edmond to give me a free estimate and then followed with the actual install a few days later. The electricians were well groomed and had on identifying shirts & hats. They were professional, efficient & thorough and left the area clean and orderly. I also needed a new switch which he had on the truck and so they installed that too, as well as the two expected light fixtures. I am thrilled with their service and the price was reasonable.

We needed an electrical lamp light post installed but they first had to remove the very old non working gas light, it required digging under a concrete drive and moving river rock out of the way. They also had to change the outside lights. They did all of that in a timely manner. They were very neat putting all the grass back cleaning up the walkways. They were friendly and highly competent. I will use them again.

Scheduled an estimate call to have a Transfer Box installed for a generator when my power goes out. The technician suggested a better way of doing it that would cost me less money (saving money is up my alley). The appointment was scheduled 3 days out, and when the date came, he was early. The job was completed in a timely manner, and the price was very reasonable. It's nice to know that you are not being taken advantage of to make extra money. Outstanding work, and now I'm ready for those power outages, and it didn't hurt my pocket. Thanks Guy's!!!

These are a rare breed in today's day and time. I am a senior citizen age 67 on a fixed income and 100% disabled. I own my home outright and I've put a new roof on it but the storm tore my roof and my pipes completely off by my 50-year-old pecan trees. The water shot through my Hunter ceiling fans and broke them and broke several of my electrical pieces in my home the water damage was very extensive. I was very fortunate as statewide roofing helps me get my home back together again. And now 24/7 came out installed my doorbell fixed my fan to where they had to just take it down and put a new light up so that it would not be dangerous. Not only that they actually put a temporary light up until they could get me one with a cord on it and they didn't have to do that. They also replaced every bulb in my home because I am handicapped and cannot do so. He fixed everything he could possibly fix. The owner took special attention to a little old lady like me and helped me God bless these people they will help you too once a year they help us please take advantage and call them before it would be too late it's every August I believe. what is so awesome about that is they wait until the end of the season to see how much damage has been done to the seniors and they actually help us out with no charge. Gather some things they cannot fix like I need a whole new electrical box and they can't do that but they can help me keep my lights on and keep me safe. And keep me to where I can live in my home and die in it I don't have but maybe 10 years left and I thank them that I don't have to worry those last 10 years. I pray I have longer but we're realistic 67 maybe? Just trying to live in my family home that I've been in since I was a baby and 24/7 electricity has helped me and I'm sure so many other seniors there's no other company like this in Oklahoma City and a lot of people can take heed from these folks. I've asked habitat for humanity I've asked all kinds of help and statewide roofing and 24/7 electric are the only two that would help me as a senior. You guys again I cannot tell you enough how much you have made my life a better place thank you God bless.....

This is my new go-to electrical service company. My dryer wouldn't power on. The dryer repairman said it was a breaker box problem and I would need an electrician to fix it. I called 24/7, and they sent Brian out right away. He confirmed that my breaker box was fine, and even agreed to talk to the dryer repairman. My dryer is now working properly. Since he was at my house any way, I asked Brian to repair a couple of light switches and install a new outlet. He did the job well and quickly, and cleaned up after himself. I was impressed with the responsiveness of the company, and with Brian's efficiency. I'll definitely use 24/7 again.

Electrical Subpanel Installation in McLoud, OK

The feeder that connects the main panel to the subpanel is truly the heart of the entire installation. We size the feeder very carefully to carry the full load the subpanel will serve, with proper headroom built in for future growth. That feeder includes the two hot conductors, a neutral conductor, and a completely separate grounding conductor. Modern code requires a four wire feeder specifically so the neutral and the ground stay properly separated at the subpanel. Keeping the neutral and the ground separate at the subpanel is absolutely essential to a safe installation. We protect the entire feeder with a correctly sized breaker located back in the main panel. We run the feeder in the appropriate wiring method for its path, whether conduit or cable. The feeder must be carefully sized for both the load it carries and the distance it has to travel. We get the feeder sizing right so the subpanel performs reliably. That correctly sized feeder is what makes the whole subpanel installation safe.

Grounding and bonding are the critical details that separate a safe subpanel from a hidden hazard. At a subpanel, the neutral bus and the ground bus must always be kept completely separate, unlike at the main panel. The neutral bar must be fully isolated from the subpanel enclosure, while the separate ground bar bonds directly to it. This careful separation prevents dangerous current from ever flowing along the grounding system where it does not belong. Bonding the neutral and ground together at a subpanel is a surprisingly common and genuinely serious mistake. We always keep them properly and fully separated exactly as the code requires. For a detached building, additional grounding electrode requirements come into play under the code. A detached structure usually needs its own grounding electrode system, such as a driven ground rod. We handle all of these critical grounding details correctly on every single subpanel we install. Getting the grounding and bonding right is simply non negotiable for safety.

A subpanel installation involves careful planning and skilled, code compliant execution from start to finish. We start by carefully evaluating your main panel to confirm it can actually supply the new subpanel feeder. We perform a careful load calculation to size both the feeder and the subpanel correctly for the area. We then select a quality subpanel with enough breaker spaces for both your current and your future needs. We run the feeder along the best available path and protect it appropriately for that particular route. We install the subpanel itself, separate the neutral and ground properly, and add grounding electrodes where required. We then install all the circuits the area needs, each one sized and protected correctly. We label every breaker clearly so the subpanel is easy to understand and service later on. Every step we take follows the code closely, from the main panel all the way to the final circuit. The finished subpanel is clean, fully organized, labeled, and built to last.

Subpanels are especially valuable for a number of specific applications around a property. A dedicated garage subpanel powers door openers, lighting, outlets, and even EV chargers without ever taxing the main panel. A dedicated workshop subpanel provides the individual circuits that heavy power tools and shop equipment require to run. A detached shop or barn gets its very own panel, fed by either an underground or an overhead feeder run from the house. A finished basement uses its own dedicated subpanel to neatly serve its lighting, outlets, and any new rooms. A home addition is far easier and much cleaner to wire when a subpanel brings power directly to that part of the house. Each one of these common applications benefits from the convenience and added capacity that a subpanel provides. We tailor each subpanel to the specific area it serves and its particular electrical needs. That careful customization is part of the real value we bring to every job. A subpanel built specifically for the job serves you well for years.

Why Electrical Code Matters for Electrical Subpanel Installation

Electrical code matters for subpanel installation because a subpanel involves specific safety details that are easy to get wrong. The National Electrical Code requires that the neutral and ground be separated at a subpanel, unlike at the main panel. That single rule prevents normal current from flowing on the grounding system and energizing metal parts. The code dictates that the feeder be sized to carry the subpanel’s load, accounting for distance and voltage drop. It requires a four wire feeder so the neutral and ground remain separate from the main panel. It mandates a grounding electrode at a detached building, such as a ground rod. It governs how the feeder breaker is sized to protect the feeder conductors. When a subpanel ignores these rules, the danger includes shock hazards on metal surfaces and fire risk. A wrongly bonded subpanel is one of the most common and dangerous code violations we find. Unpermitted or non compliant subpanel work can also jeopardize your insurance coverage. Inspectors verify subpanel work closely because these details have serious safety consequences. Installing a subpanel to code is the only way to be sure it is genuinely safe.

Most Common Electrical Subpanel Installation Questions

Electrical subpanel installation raises plenty of practical questions, from grounding to distance to sizing. We have answered the ones our McLoud customers ask most so you know what to expect before we arrive.

A subpanel is a smaller electrical panel that is fed from your main panel and distributes power to a specific area. It adds breaker space and brings circuits closer to where they are used. The subpanel connects to the main panel through a feeder, which carries power from one to the other. This setup lets you serve an area without running many long individual circuits from the main panel. Subpanels are common in garages, workshops, additions, basements, and detached buildings. They make managing the electrical needs of a specific area much more convenient. A subpanel is essentially an extension of your main panel into another part of your property. Understanding this helps clarify when a subpanel is the right solution.

You need a subpanel in several common situations around a home or property. When your main panel is full with no open slots, a subpanel adds the capacity you need. When you build an addition or finish a basement, a subpanel serves the new circuits efficiently. When you have a garage or workshop with significant electrical needs, a subpanel provides nearby breaker space. When you have a detached building, a subpanel gives it its own distribution point. Each of these situations is far easier to handle with a subpanel than without one. We help you determine whether your situation calls for a subpanel. That evaluation points you to the right solution.

The convenience of a subpanel goes beyond just adding capacity. Having breakers near the area they serve makes it easy to manage and service those circuits. Adding new circuits in that area later becomes simple because the breaker space is already there. A single feeder to the subpanel is more efficient than many long home runs. A subpanel keeps the wiring for a specific area organized and contained. This organization makes troubleshooting and future work much easier. For a workshop or garage, the convenience of local breakers is significant. When you want capacity and convenience for an area, a subpanel delivers both.

Separating the neutral and ground in a subpanel is a critical safety requirement of the electrical code. At the main panel, the neutral and ground are bonded together at a single point. At a subpanel, they must be kept separate, with the neutral isolated and the ground bonded to the enclosure. This separation ensures that current flows only on the neutral and not on the grounding system. If the neutral and ground were bonded at the subpanel, current could flow on the ground path. Current on the grounding system is dangerous and defeats the purpose of grounding. Keeping them separate maintains a clear, safe path for fault current only. This is one of the most important details in a subpanel installation.

The consequences of bonding the neutral and ground at a subpanel are serious. When bonded, normal neutral current can travel on the grounding conductors and metal parts. This can energize metal surfaces that should never carry current. It creates a shock hazard on equipment frames, conduit, and other grounded parts. It also interferes with the proper operation of protective devices. This is exactly the kind of hazard the separation rule prevents. A wrongly bonded subpanel is a common mistake that creates real danger. We always avoid this error by following the code precisely.

Getting this detail right requires the knowledge a licensed electrician brings. We isolate the neutral bus from the subpanel enclosure so it carries only neutral current. We bond the ground bus to the enclosure so it provides a safe fault path. We use a four wire feeder that keeps the neutral and ground separate from the main panel. We verify the separation is correct before energizing the subpanel. This is not a detail to guess at or get wrong. The safety of everyone using the circuits depends on it. When we install a subpanel, the neutral and ground are always properly separated.

A subpanel can be located a considerable distance from the main panel, but the distance affects the installation. There is no strict maximum distance, but longer runs require careful planning. The main consideration is voltage drop, which increases as the feeder gets longer. To compensate for voltage drop on a long run, we may need to use larger feeder conductors. This keeps the voltage at the subpanel within an acceptable range for the connected loads. The wiring method also matters for a long feeder, especially when it goes underground or between buildings. We calculate the proper conductor size based on both the load and the distance. That calculation ensures the subpanel performs reliably regardless of distance.

The distance is especially relevant for detached buildings and outbuildings. A feeder to a detached shop, garage, or barn can run a significant distance. That run may be underground in conduit or direct burial cable, or overhead. The longer the run, the more voltage drop becomes a factor in sizing. We account for the full distance when sizing the feeder for a detached building. We also handle the additional grounding requirements that detached buildings have. A detached structure needs its own grounding electrode at the subpanel. We address all of these factors for a feeder of any length.

Proper feeder sizing for distance is essential to a subpanel that works well. An undersized feeder over a long distance causes voltage drop that affects equipment. Lights may dim and motors may struggle if the voltage drops too much. We size the feeder to deliver proper voltage even at the far end of a long run. This may mean upsizing the conductors beyond what the load alone would require. The investment in proper sizing pays off in reliable performance. We never cut corners on feeder sizing for distance. When your subpanel is far from the main panel, we size the feeder correctly.

A subpanel is an excellent solution for a garage or workshop, and we install them regularly. Garages and workshops often have significant electrical needs that benefit from dedicated breaker space. Power tools, equipment, lighting, outlets, and even EV chargers all draw power in these spaces. Running all of these circuits from the main panel can be inefficient and impractical. A subpanel in the garage or workshop puts the breakers right where the circuits are used. This makes the space far more functional and easier to manage. We size the subpanel for the equipment and circuits you plan to use. The result is a workspace with the power it needs close at hand.

The benefits of a garage or workshop subpanel are substantial. You gain dedicated breaker space for all the circuits the space requires. You can add circuits for new tools or equipment easily in the future. The local breakers make it simple to manage and service the space. Heavy tools get the dedicated circuits they need to run properly. An EV charger can be added on its own circuit from the subpanel. The whole space becomes more capable and convenient. For anyone who uses a garage or workshop seriously, a subpanel is a worthwhile addition.

Installing a garage or workshop subpanel involves the same careful work as any subpanel. We size the feeder to serve the loads the space will demand. We run the feeder from the main panel and protect it appropriately. We install the subpanel with the neutral and ground properly separated. We add the circuits the space needs, sized and protected correctly. For an attached garage, the feeder run is usually straightforward. For a detached structure, we handle the additional grounding requirements. When you want a subpanel for your garage or workshop, we install it right.

A detached building almost always needs its own subpanel to receive and distribute power. A shop, barn, garage, or guest house separated from the main house requires its own distribution point. Running individual circuits all the way to a detached building is impractical and inefficient. Instead, a single feeder runs from the main panel to a subpanel in the detached building. That subpanel then distributes power to the circuits within the structure. This is the standard and proper way to power a detached building. The subpanel gives the building convenient breaker space for all its needs. We install subpanels for detached buildings as a routine part of our work.

Detached buildings have specific code requirements that make professional installation important. The feeder to the building must be sized for the load and the distance it travels. The feeder may run underground in conduit or direct burial cable, or overhead. A detached structure requires its own grounding electrode, such as a ground rod, at the building. The neutral and ground must be separated at the subpanel, just as in any subpanel. A disconnect may be required at the detached building depending on the situation. These requirements exist for safety and must be followed precisely. We handle all of them correctly for every detached building.

The benefits of a properly installed subpanel in a detached building are clear. The building gets reliable power distributed to all its circuits. You can add circuits in the building easily because the breaker space is there. The local breakers make managing and servicing the building’s power convenient. A workshop or barn gets the dedicated circuits its equipment needs. The whole structure becomes far more functional with proper power. We size and install the subpanel to serve the building’s needs for years. When your detached building needs power, we install the subpanel correctly.

The right subpanel size depends on the electrical load the area it serves will demand. We perform a load calculation to determine how much power the subpanel needs to provide. The calculation accounts for the circuits, equipment, and appliances the area will use. From that total, we determine the appropriate amperage for the subpanel and its feeder. We also consider the number of breaker spaces the area needs now and in the future. A subpanel should have enough capacity and spaces for current needs with room to grow. Sizing it correctly prevents the need for another upgrade soon after. We base the size on your specific area and its demands.

Both the amperage and the number of breaker spaces matter when sizing a subpanel. The amperage determines how much total power the subpanel can supply. The breaker spaces determine how many circuits you can connect to it. A garage with light needs requires less than a workshop full of equipment. A detached building with a shop and an EV charger needs substantial capacity. We size both the amperage and the spaces to fit your situation. Choosing a subpanel with extra spaces makes future additions easy. We plan for both your current and anticipated needs.

Sizing the feeder to match the subpanel is just as important as sizing the subpanel itself. The feeder must be able to carry the full load the subpanel will supply. We size the feeder conductors and the protective breaker to match the subpanel’s amperage. For a long run, we may upsize the feeder to account for voltage drop. The feeder, the breaker, and the subpanel all have to work together as a system. We get all of these components sized correctly for safe, reliable performance. This coordinated sizing is part of a proper subpanel installation. When you need a subpanel sized right, we calculate it precisely.

A subpanel installation involves working in your live main panel, which makes it genuinely dangerous. The main panel lugs stay energized even when the main breaker is off. Installing the feeder breaker and connecting the feeder requires working near these energized parts. An accidental contact can cause a severe arc flash or a fatal shock. The installation also requires precise feeder sizing, grounding, and neutral to ground separation. A mistake in any of these areas can create a fire or shock hazard. Subpanel work also typically requires a permit and an inspection. For all these reasons, we recommend leaving subpanel installation to a licensed professional.

The technical details of a subpanel installation demand real expertise. The feeder must be sized for both the load and the distance, accounting for voltage drop. The neutral and ground must be properly separated at the subpanel, a detail often done wrong. The grounding must meet code, including a grounding electrode for a detached building. The connections must be secure and torqued to specification to prevent heat. Getting any of these wrong creates a hazard that may not show until it fails. A licensed electrician knows how to handle every one of these details. That expertise is exactly what keeps the installation safe.

Hiring a licensed electrician gives you a safe subpanel and peace of mind. We size the feeder and subpanel correctly for your needs. We separate the neutral and ground properly as the code requires. We handle the grounding, including electrodes for detached buildings. We pull the permit and handle the inspection so the work is verified. Our work is backed by a one year labor warranty and a three year panel warranty. A free local estimate means you know the cost before we begin. When you need a subpanel installed safely and right, our McLoud electricians are ready to help.

Installing a subpanel typically requires a permit, and that requirement protects you. A permit triggers an inspection, which is an independent confirmation that the work meets code. Adding a subpanel and its feeder is significant electrical work that falls under permitting rules. The permit process ensures the feeder is sized correctly and the grounding is done right. It also confirms the neutral and ground are properly separated at the subpanel. Skipping the permit might seem like a shortcut, but it creates problems down the road. Unpermitted electrical work can surface during a home sale and force costly corrections. A permit is inexpensive protection against all of those risks.

We handle the entire permitting process so you never have to deal with it. As a licensed Oklahoma contractor, we know which permits a subpanel job requires. We file the paperwork, coordinate the inspection, and meet the inspector on site. That oversight benefits you, because a qualified second set of eyes confirms the work is safe. Inspectors check the same details we already build into every installation. Passing inspection is routine for our work, because we install to code from the start. The permit becomes a record that proves the subpanel was installed correctly. That documentation adds value and protects your home.

The benefits of permitted subpanel work extend well beyond passing an inspection. Permitted work keeps your homeowner insurance valid and your coverage intact. It provides documentation that matters when you sell your home. It ensures the work was verified by an independent inspector for safety. It protects you from the liability of unpermitted electrical work. The modest permit fee is minor next to the cost of correcting unpermitted work later, and when you hire us the permitting is simply part of the service. We believe in doing the job correctly from start to finish. You deserve a subpanel that stands up to inspection and lasts.
